SMART ADVICE

Ensure your family’s safety with smoke alarms

Installing a smoke alarm in every bedroom in your home can save the life of you and your loved ones. Sadly, we’re all familiar with news reports of families losing their homes and loved ones in house fires.  When you’re asleep, your sense of smell also sleeps. You won’t hear or smell a fire.  If a fire starts, toxic fumes can quickly overcome you. However, you will hear a smoke alarm.

Changes in smoke alarm regulations

In 2011, eleven people, including eight children, died in a house fire in Slacks Creek, Brisbane. The family were sleeping when the fire started, and they did not have a working smoke alarm. The coroner’s report found that lives would have been saved if the smoke alarms were working. The Queensland Government has made changes to the laws in the following ways:

Existing homes

From 2017

  • when replacing smoke alarms, new smoke alarms must be photoelectric.
  • If a smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it must be replaced.
  • Faulty smoke alarms must be replaced immediately.

From 2027

  • Smoke alarms must be photoelectric.
  • Smoke alarms must be hardwired to the main power source with a battery back-up.
  • Smoke alarms must be interconnected with every other smoke alarm.
  • Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, hallway and storey.

New homes or substantially renovated homes (now)

  • Smoke alarms must be photoelectric.
  • Smoke alarms must be hardwired to the main power source with a battery back-up.
  • Smoke alarms must be interconnected with every other smoke alarm.
  • Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, hallway and storey.

Photoelectric smoke alarms respond faster to fires.

Photoelectric smoke alarms have more advanced technology. This enables the smoke alarms to respond faster to fires because they can detect a smouldering fire early before it develops.

Keep your home and family safe.

Many homes have smoke alarms with either a flat battery or no battery at all. It’s not uncommon for people to pull the batteries out if the smoke alarm goes off while cooking but forget to put them back in! Many homes we visit have faulty smoke alarms. To protect you and your family DJ Electrical & Air recommends:

  • Replacing smoke alarms that are 10 years old with the more advanced photoelectric smoke alarms.
  • Checking and replacing the batteries in your smoke alarms every three months.
  • Getting your smoke alarms tested by a qualified electrician.
